INDIAN INSTITUTE OF SPACE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (IIST) Thiruvananthapuram Ph.D. Programme – January 2014

Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology envisions the integration of Space Technology and Space Science educational programs with basic and applied research for meeting the national R&D requirements of science and technology in general and of the Indian Space Programme in particular. The institute provides a vibrant research atmosphere and offers doctoral and postdoctoral programmes.
Applications are invited from highly motivated candidates for admission to the Ph.D. Programme starting in January 2014, in the areas of Aerospace Engineering, Avionics Engineering, Earth and Space Sciences, Mathematics and Physics.

Eligibility :

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Applicants with Master’s Degree in Engineering/Technology

  • Applicants with Master’s Degree in Engineering / Technology must have secured first class or equivalent in the Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees. They must have pursued their Master’s degree on the basis of qualified GATE score. Candidates with MS in Engineering or equivalent from leading foreign Universities with outstanding academic record (or) MS by Research with outstanding academic record can be considered without GATE. 
  • Candidates with Integrated Masters degree (or Dual Degree) in Engg/Tech from IITs and IISc with minimum CGPA 9.0/10 can be considered without GATE.

2. Applicants with Master’s Degree in Science

Applicants must have Master’s Degree in the relevant area with first class or equivalent in their Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees. They must have qualified UGC/CSIR NET -JRF (or) NET-Lectureship (or) GATE qualified in the relevant disciplines. 

3. Applicants with Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/Technology

  • Outstanding candidates with Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with an excellent academic record and aptitude for research may be considered for direct admission to the Ph.D. Programme. Such candidates must have secured CGPA of 9.0/10 or better and a valid GATE score of 675 or better.
  • B. Tech students from IITs with CGPA better than 9.0/10 do not require GATE.

Age Limit :

  • Applicant should be below 28 years as on 16th December 2013. 
  • Age relaxation applicable as per Government Rules.

Nationality : 

Applicant should be an Indian citizen
  • Result awaited candidates in the final year/semester are also eligible to apply, if they have qualified for GATE/NET as required. Such candidates may be screened in for Test/Interview based on the marks obtained by them until the current year/semester.
  • Based on their Test/Interview performance, these candidates may be provisionally selected subject to the condition that they have to produce the provisional certificate of obtaining the qualifying degree with required percentage of marks by the date stipulated in their provisional admission letter. If they fail to produce the provisional/ degree certificate by this date their admission offer will be withdrawn and the offer may be given to next eligible candidate in the waiting list.
  • In exceptional cases, a provisionally selected candidate may be allowed to join IIST without submitting the provisional/degree certificate on the stipulated date of joining, subject to the conditions that (a) At the time of joining the candidate should have completed all the requirements for the award of the qualifying degree including all examinations, project works and viva voce (b) The candidate should produce at the time of joining a Course Completion Certificate issued by the competent authority in the University/Institute specifically confirming that all examinations, project works and viva voce for the qualifying degree are completed (c) If the above condition is satisfied, the candidate can be given provisional admission with the undertaking that all pending certificates, mark sheets, degree certificates (Original or Provisional) will be submitted to IIST latest by 30th April 2014, failing which the admission stands cancelled. For such candidates who are provisionally admitted to the IIST Ph.D. Programme as per (c) above, no fellowship is paid during the period before the required certificates are submitted. However, on regularization of admission following the submission of all required documents before the stipulated date, the candidate will be paid fellowship with retrospective effect from the date of joining. 

RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP :

  1. The Scholars selected for IIST Ph.D. programme with Master’s Degree in Engineering/Technology will receive a Fellowship of Rs. 18000/- p.m., and scholars with Master’s degree in Science or Humanities with NET-JRF or GATE qualification will be given a Fellowship of Rs. 16000/ pm. Scholars with NET-Lectureship will be given a Fellowship of Rs. 12000/ pm, which will be enhanced to Rs. 16000/ pm if the scholars qualify for NET-JRF.
  2. After two years of research experience, their performance will be evaluated by a review committee constituted by Director IIST. Based on the review, the fellowship amount of Rs. 18000/16000/12000 may be enhanced to Rs. 20000/18000/14000 respectively.
  3. The scholars will be required to assist the Departments in tutorials / practicals or related academic activities normally limited to 6 hours per week.
  4. The scholars will have to pay for the services provided by the Institute like boarding / lodging / medical facilities etc., as per IIST rules. 

SELECTION PROCEDURE :

  1. Applications in the prescribed format will be received until 16th December 2013
  2. From the eligible applicants, a short-listing will be done taking into account their applicable GATE/NET scores.
  3. The final selection is based on a written test/ interview or interview alone depending on the number of candidates.
  4. List of short-listed candidates for written test or interview will be displayed in IIST website by 4th week of December 2013
  5. Written test of two hours duration as applicable and Interview will be conducted at IIST, Trivandrum during 2nd week of January 2014.
  6. The written test is aimed to evaluate the basic understanding and proficiency in the relevant area.
  7. Selected candidates will be intimated within a week after the final interview. Results will also be displayed in our website.
  8. Outstation candidates will be paid to and fro sleeper class train fare by shortest route, or actual fare (whichever is lower) for attending the interview.

Indus University Ahmedabad notification for Ph.D 2013-14 in Engineering / Science and Management

Indus University Ahmedabad has released notification for admission into Ph.D in full time and part time basis. The details are as follows :

Streams : 

Civil / Computer Science / Electrical / Electronics & Communication / Mechanical / Metallurgical / Management/ Mathematics / Physics / Chemistry

The categories :

  1. Full time Ph.D. Program
  2. Part time Ph.D. Program

Fees :

Application Fees :
Rs. 1,000/- through DD in favour of ‘Indus University’ payable at Ahmedabad.
Course Fees:
Rs. 30,000/- per semester (for both full time and part time)

Duration :

Minimum period of study and research shall not be less than 3 years from the date of provisional registration of the candidate for the full time candidates, and shall not be less than 4 years for part time candidates. However, in case of exceptional performance, the period can be reduced with the recommendations of the Apex Research Committee (ARC) and approval of the Executive President.

Admission Procedure :

  • Applicants fulfilling minimum eligibility criteria, shall be required to take Indus University Research Aptitude Test (IURAT) and appear for a personal interview (PI).
  • The research aptitude test shall comprise of two sections .One section is on general reasoning, and the other on respective streams. The test paper will have multiple-choice type questions.
  • Duration of the test will be ONE hour.
  • During the personal interview, the candidate shall have to make a presentation for about 10 minutes on the main theme of the proposed research, which will be followed by an interview by the panel. The DRC shall test the potential of the applicant for conducting research work.
  • Based on the academic / research / industrial record and the performance of the applicant in IURAT & PI, the ARC/ DRC shall recommend to the Dean (Research)/ Executive President (Vice Chancellor) the names of the suitable candidates.
  • Successful candidates will be informed of their selection through their email ID within two weeks from the date of RAT & PI.

Research Assistantship :

  • Research assistance, limited in number, shall be available to full time research scholars, based
  • on the recommendations of ARC / DRC.

Eligibility Criteria for Full time and Part time PhD :

Engineering Streams
  • M.E / M.Tech in the relevant branch of Engineering or Technology with 60 % marks or CGPA of 6.5 on a 10 point scale for general merit. For SC / ST / OBC candidates it is 55 % marks or CGPA of 6 on a 10 point scale.
  • B.E / B.Tech degree from reputed institutions in the relevant branch of Engineering or Technology with 60 % marks or CGPA of 6.5 on a 10 point scale for general merit for SC / ST / OBC candidates it is 55 % marks or CGPA of 6 on a 10 point scale with minimum 3 years experience in professional environments and / or publications in referred journal.
Science Stream
  • Masters Degree in Science / Computer Application with 60 % marks or CGPA of 6.5 on a 10 point scale for general merit. For SC / ST/ OBC candidates it is 55 % marks or CGPA of 6 on a 10 point scale.
Management Stream
  • MBA / PGDBA / PGDBM from AICTE approved list of institutions with 60 % marks or CGPA of 6.5 on a 10 point scale for general merit. For SC / ST / OBC candidates, it is 55% marks or CGPA of 6 on a 10 point scale.

  • Exceptionally bright candidates with notable professional achievements with 55 % marks in Masters program can also apply.

  2. For SC/ST candidates Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 6.0 on a 10 point scale grading system, or not less than 55% marks in aggregate. 

Ph.D. PROGRAM ON FULLTIME BASIS IN SCIENCE DEPARTMENTS :

ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION :
Candidates with valid GATE / NET scores only, are eligible for admission to Ph. D program in Science Departments / English.
Minimum Qualifications :
  1. B.Sc. and M.Sc./M.Phil. in concerned subject or equivalent degree(at all levels) with first class with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 6.5 on a 10 point scale grading system, or not less than 60% marks in the aggregate.
  2. For SC/ST candidates Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 6.0 on a 10 point scale grading system, or not less than 55% marks in aggregate. 

Ph.D. PROGRAM ON FULLTIME BASIS IN SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT : 

ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION :
Candidates possessing M.B.A. (admission through CAT/MAT/GMET Score) AND
  • B. Tech./ M.Tech.in any branch of Engineering with a valid GATE / NET Score
OR
  • M.Tech. (admission through GATE score) in any branch of Engineering are eligible for admission to Ph.D. program in School of Management.

NOTE :

Minimum Qualifications :

Ph.D (ENGINEERING) : 

  • M.Tech./ME./M.Sc.(Engg.) degree in the respective or allied area. 
  • The candidates with Bachelor's degree in Engineering/ Technology or Master's degree in Sciences in an allied area with exceptional academic record and having a valid GATE score may also apply. 
  • For Ph.D. in BSBE, candidate with MBBS, B.Pharma or M.Pharma Degree may also apply.

NIT Calicut is inviting applications for Ph.D. in the following schemes : 
  1. Full-time (FT)
  2. Part-time (PT)
  3. Internal (IN)
  4. External (EX).
  • Ph.D. fellowships are available for candidates under Full-time scheme.
  • For the Part-time and External schemes of registration, the applicant must be an employee of a recognized institution/organization with at least two years of service and be engaged in professional work in the area to which admission is sought.
  • Candidates under Part-time scheme will have to submit no objection certificate from the Head of the institution.
  • External registration is available only for candidates sponsored by and employed in recognized research institutions such as Research and Development Organizations / National Laboratories/ and Industries having R & D facilities recognized by Department of Science and Technology. A candidate applying for admission to the external registration programme must provide detailed information about the research facilities available at his/her organization and must produce a certificate from a competent authority specifying that these facilities would be available to him/her for carrying out research. He/She should also provide the bio-data of the prospective supervisor who would supervise the candidate’s work at his/her organization. External registration will be granted only when a qualified research guide is available in the sponsoring institution and is willing to guide the candidate along with a guide in NITC. Candidates from educational institution are not eligible under external scheme.
  • Registration under Internal (IN) scheme is available only to full time/contract employees of NITC. The Institute offers Ph.D. programmes under part time scheme for permanent/contract employees and research staff of the Institute if they apply for the same at the normal time for admission with the recommendation of the Head of the department in which he/she is employed. Those who are working on research projects in the Institute should have completed a period of not less than one year on the project and project should be in force for at least two more years. A certificate to this effect from the Principal Investigator/Head of the Department concerned should be attached to the application form. If an employee who has registered as a part time research scholar resigns his/her job before the minimum period required for the PhD work, his/her registration shall stand automatically cancelled. However, if he/she has completed the course work and comprehensive examination and the required minimum period, he/she can be allowed to continue the research work if the Doctoral Committee of the research scholar recommends the same. 

ELIGIBILITY & ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO Ph.D. PROGRAMMES 

The candidates for Ph.D. Programmes may be offered admission, based on certain minimum academic requirements to be satisfied by the candidates as given below : 
  • The maximum age for admission to Ph.D. programme is 50 years. 

Faculty of Engineering: 

  • M.Tech. Degree in Engineering/Technology in the appropriate branch of study with first class or minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5/10) [For SC/ST candidates, the minimum mark is 55% (CGPA 6.0/10)]. Candidates shall be required to have passed the four-year regular full time B.E./B.Tech. Degree in an appropriate branch with minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5/10) in aggregate in the qualifying examination. [For SC/ST candidates 55% marks (CGPA 6.0/10)]. Candidates under lateral entry should have passed the three year diploma in engineering with minimum 60% marks [For SC/ST candidates 55% marks (CGPA 6.0/10)]. 

Faculty of Architecture : 

  • Master’s degree in Architecture/ Design/ Planning/ Engineering/ Technology or its equivalent with first class or minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5/10) [For SC/ST candidates, the minimum mark is 55% (CGPA 6.0/10)]. 
  • Candidates should possess First Class (60%) or equivalent both in Bachelors and Masters degrees. For SC/ST candidates 55% (CGPA 6.0/10) or equivalent both in Bachelors and Masters degrees. 

Faculty of Nanoscience & Technology : 

  • M.Tech. Degree in any discipline of Engineering/ Technology/ Nanoscience & Technology with first class or minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5/10) [For SC/ST candidates, the minimum mark is 55% (CGPA 6.0/10)]. 
OR
  • Master’s degree in Chemistry/ Physics/ Life science/ Nanoscience and Technology with first class or minimum 60 % marks (CGPA 6.5/10) or equivalent, [for SC/ST candidates, the minimum mark is 55% (CGPA 6.0/10)] and a valid GATE score or UGC/CSIR/NBHM/NET/KSCSTE fellowship in the relevant area, tenable from the current year. 
  • Candidates applying for External and Part-time scheme of registration do not require GATE score or UGC/CSIR/NBHM/NET/KSCSTE fellowship. 

Faculty of Biotechnology : 

  • M.Tech. Degree in Biotechnology/Life Science with first class or minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5/10) [For SC/ST candidates, the minimum mark is 55% (CGPA 6.0/10)]. 
OR
  • Master’s degree in Life science with first class or minimum 60 % marks (CGPA 6.5/10) or equivalent, [for SC/ST candidates, the minimum mark is 55% (CGPA 6.0/10)] and a valid GATE score or fellowships such as UGC/CSIR/NBHM/NET/KSCSTE in the relevant area, tenable from the current year. 
  • Candidates applying for External and Part-time scheme of registration do not require GATE score or 
  • fellowships such as UGC/CSIR/NBHM/NET/KSCSTE etc. 

Faculty of Science (Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics) : 

  • Master’s degree in Mathematics /Statistics /Chemistry /Physics /Electronics /Computer Science &Applications /Nano Science & Technology /Material Science /Photonics OR M.Tech in relevant disciplines related to the major areas of research available in the department with first or minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5/10) or equivalent, (for SC/ST candidates, the minimum mark is 55% (CGPA 6.0/10)] and a valid GATE score or UGC/CSIR/NBHM/NET/JEST/KSCSTE fellowship in the relevant areas tenable from the current year. 
  • Candidates applying for External and Part-time scheme of registration do not require GATE score or UGC/CSIR/NBHM/NET/JEST/KSCSTE fellowship. 
  • Candidates should possess First Class (60%) or equivalent both in Bachelors and Masters degrees. For SC/ST candidates 55% (CGPA 6.0/10) or equivalent both in Bachelors and Masters degrees. 

Faculty of Management Studies : 

  • Post graduate degree in relevant area with a minimum of first class or equivalent grade from an institution recognized by UGC/AICTE. [For SC/ST candidates the minimum shall be a second class or equivalent grade). In addition, the candidates should have a valid UGC/NET/CSIR/JRF fellowship in the relevant areas tenable from the current year. 
  • Candidates who have master’s degree in engineering and technology with GATE score, OR applying for internal/external/part-time scheme of registration, OR have managerial experience for not less than five years do not require UGC/NET/CSIR/JRF fellowship. 
  • Candidates should possess First Class (60%) or equivalent both in Bachelors and Masters degrees. For SC/ST candidates 55% (CGPA 6.0/10) or equivalent both in Bachelors and Masters degrees. 

SELECTION OF CANDIDATES :

The admission to Ph.D. Programmes will be on the basis of written test and/or interview, by the respective Department/School. 

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE :

A few research fellowships are available to full time research scholars who are not receiving any financial support/ scholarship from other Agencies or State or Central Governments. They are required to assist the Department in the academic work for at least 8 hours per week as per guidelines issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Govt. of India, in addition to satisfying other conditions for the award /renewal of the fellowship.

Ph.D. admission notification in electronics @ University of Calcutta

Applications are invited for admission to the Ph.D. Program in the Department of Electronic Science.
  • Candidates willing to pursue the research work leading subsequently to Ph.D. (Science) degree in Electronic Science of the University of Calcutta should apply in the prescribed proforma downloadable from University website (www.caluniv.ac.in). 
  • The application form accompanied by the counterpart of a challan (obtainable from the sales counter of the University at its College Street campus) of Rs. 100/- should be submitted to the office of the Secretary, University College of Science at the above address. 
  • The challan must be endorsed by the Head of the Department before deposition of fees at any cash counter of the University.
  • The eligible candidate will have to appear at a written examination to be held in the Department, the details of which are appended below. Successful candidates will have to appear for an interview/counseling. The final selection for joining the Ph.D. Program of this Department, along with the allocation of supervisor; will be made on the basis of this interview/counseling.
  • Candidates who have already cleared UGC-CSIR (JRF) NET/GATE/SET/Teacher Fellowship or passed the M.Phil./M.Tech./equivalent examination are exempted from appearing for the admission test but have to directly appear at the interview.

Admissions to Ph.D. and Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. programmes @ National Brain Research Centre


National Brain Research Centre (NBRC) will select candidates through following channels for admissions to Ph.D. and Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. programmes for the year 2014.

  1. Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Science (JGEEBILS).
  2. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE-2013/GATE-2014).
  3. Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST-2014).
  4. CSIR (JRF) (Chemistry) (2013-14 batch)

Candidates will be short-listed for a two-tier interview based on their performance in the JGEEBILS examination or their score in the GATE/JEST/CSIR(JRF)(Chemistry) examination.

Eligibility :


Ph.D. (NEUROSCIENCE)

  • Master's degree or equivalent in any branch of Science such as Life Sciences/Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer applications/Pharmacy/Veterinary Science/Psychology from a recognized Institute/University or A minimum of four-year bachelor's degree or equivalent in Engineering/Technology/Medicine from a recognized Institute/University. 
  • Candidates appearing for final year of the qualifying examination are also eligible to apply. 
  • Only the candidates with at least 55% (for SC/ST/PH candidates, 50%) marks or equivalent grade from secondary (10th) examination onwards will be considered. 
  • Candidates should calculate their percentage up to two decimal points without rounding off to determine their eligibility.

Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. (NEUROSCIENCE)

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in any branch of Science such as Life Sciences/Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer applications/Pharmacy/Veterinary Science/Psychology/Engineering/Technology/Medicine from a recognized Institute/University.
  • Candidates appearing for final year of the qualifying examination are also eligible to apply.Only the candidates with at least 55% (for SC/ST/PH candidates, 50%) marks or equivalent grade from secondary (10th) examination onwards will be considered. 
  • Candidates should calculate their percentage up to two decimal points without rounding off to determine their eligibility.
  • Reservation/Concessions for SC/ST/PH candidates will be followed as per Government of India rules.
  • Only Indian nationals are eligible for the above programmes.

Application procedure for the candidates appearing for JGEEBILS :

  • NBRC is Joining JGEEBILS (Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences) with CCMB, CDFD, NCBS, NCCS, DBS(TIFR), INSTEM, NII, IISER Kolkata, IISER Pune, IISER Thiruvananthapuram, IISER Mohali and IISER Bhopal for admission to its Ph.D. and Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. programmes.
  • Candidates for both Ph.D. and Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. courses have to appear for the same entrance test which will be conducted on Sunday, December 8, 2013.

  • NBRC will accept applications from GATE qualified candidates (with 85 percentile or more in GATE 2013/2014) in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology and Instrumentation Engineering only for its Ph.D. and Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. programmes. 
  • These candidates should apply to NBRC with their GATE score. The application can be submitted online or by post.
